In our magazine series, Hoppin will take you behind-the-scenes of a variety of careers and workspaces so you can get better perspective of what it might be like working in that job or industry. In this article we caught up with Hoppin Host Chrissy Fichtl, the Brooklyn based Founder of luxury home fragrance brand APOTHEKE.
Name: Chrissy Fichtl
Title: Founder, CEO
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Where can we find you?
Home. I love my home in Brooklyn!
Where'd you get your start?
I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology for Marketing. I've found that real life experience and working is the true school of business. I also can roller skate like no one knows.
What's one thing you know to be true?
It takes 10 years to be a success and see real growth in your company.
One word your friends would use to describe you?
How do you get sh*t done?
I start by drinking coffee in the morning and hydrate with water the rest of the day. I do my best work when I'm alone, I love to listen to Bob or Stephen Marley and just focus.
If you could shadow someone else for the day, who would it be?
What's your typical day look like?
When my alarm goes off my husband gets up with the kids and I sleep in for 30 minutes. It is the best time of the day for me! I'm up with the kids at 7:00 AM. From 7:00 AM to 8:45 AM is a total blur. I do the 8:45 AM school drop off and then around 9:00 AM I walk to work. A huge key to my happiness is that my office, kids school and house are all 3 block away-I love that I have no commute. From 9:00-5:00 PM I'm at APOTHEKE all day, I usually eat lunch at my desk everyday.
What Do You Actually Do?
A little bit of everything as any business owner probably does. Sales, accounting, product development, cost of goods, production meetings, HR and creative branding are probably my most involved job descriptions right now.
What does your workspace look like?
Organized chaos on my desk. My office is a mini showroom to inspire.
Who do you work closely with?
Sebastian. My husband and business partner.
How did you land in this job?
Soap was a hobby that turned into a business. A business that is now turning into a lifestyle.
Favorite part of the job?
The people that work for APOTHEKE and problem solving.
What’s in your inbox?
40 emails that are important. If it goes over 50, I have anxiety.
What does your team look like?
Small. We are a tight group and we're all on the same page. We need a team that is ready to jump in and do or be anything. Asking "is this my job responsibility?" doesn't fly here.
What's your company on a mission to do?
Become a household name in the fragrance category.
What's your secret sauce (that people on the outside wouldn’t know)?
As a company, we're obsessed with bagels.
What's APOTHEKE's Hiring Philosophy?
Wear many hats. Be ready to learn and do anything. Be part of the Apotheke family.
What's the fastest way to get into this type of work?
Work in the industry you want to learn the most about.
What should people interested in this field read?
Scientific Soapmaking by Kevin M. Dunn
What do you need to succeed in this industry?
Drive and passion!
Three things you always do/show your shadowers?
The factory. I always tell my story and the struggles I had in the beginning. Plus, I always bring doughnuts.
Why do you love hosting on Hoppin?
I love to meet people that have the drive to do something. I want to make sure they know that it can happen.
At Hoppin, we believe that working alongside someone allows you to get to know their true nature, their abilities and their gifts, which is a much better indicator of “fit” than any job interview can provide. And we also believe that the only real way to learn and develop is to actively learn while doing. With Hoppin you can do that with real professionals who are working in the field.
